Eight entrepreneurs received keys to business spaces at the Territory’s first entrepreneurial zone in Huntums Ghut on Friday.

The initiative is the brainchild of Communications and Works Minister and Fifth District Representative Kye Rymer, who joined Junior Minister for Financial Services and Economic Development Hon. Lorna Smith, OBE, for the handover. The first building was completed in July and will serve as an incubator for start-ups and emerging businesses.

Smith said the initiative forms part of efforts to make the small business sector “a true engine of economic growth”, supported by education, entrepreneurship and the MSME Grants Programme.

The new businesses will offer gifts and event supplies, transportation, groceries, hair braiding, fragrances and other products and services.

Smith said several spaces remain unallocated, while work is continuing on a second building at the site.

She said the handover was especially meaningful, having grown up in the community before entering leadership and public service.

“Yesterday, it felt especially good to give back to the community that helped shape me,” Smith stated.
