The BVI National Chess Teams have arrived in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, to represent the Territory at the 46th Chess Olympiad from 15 to 27 September.
More than 200 national teams are expected to compete in 11 rounds of over-the-board competition at what is reportedly the largest Olympiad in the event’s 102-year history.
According to the BVI Chess Federation, the Open Team comprises Maurice Lettsome on Board One, Jhon Samuel on Board Two, Shamoy Joseph on Board Three and Anferny Raheem Hodge on Board Four. Dimitri Fungfook is the reserve player, while Art Christopher serves as captain.
The Women’s Team includes Tiandra Scatliffe on Board One, Makalia Fergus on Board Two, Alexis Ganigan on Board Three and Chane-Ann Chin on Board Four. Kiara Phillip is the reserve player, with Angela Franco serving as captain.
Jenefer McSheene is the team manager, while Sachkia Barnes is the BVI’s delegate to the International Chess Federation Congress. Parents and other delegation supporters are also accompanying the teams.
Players began international training in June, while the younger members gained additional experience through preparatory tournaments in Peru and Aruba during the summer.
“The Olympiad is one of the most important team events on the global chess calendar and provides a valuable opportunity for our players to test their skills, gain experience and represent the Virgin Islands with distinction,” the BVI Chess Federation stated.
The Federation thanked the teams’ families, sponsors, supporters and the wider community for helping to make the trip possible.
Sponsors include the International Chess Federation, the Confederation of Chess in the Americas, the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Georges Rhymer Institute of Public Policy, Barry’s Electrical Services, Barnes & Co. and Mellow Moods Cafe.
