Governor Daniel Pruce will remain in the British Virgin Islands until January 2028 after his tenure was extended by one year.
His three-year appointment was previously expected to end in January 2027.
Pruce announced the extension in a video posted on the Governor’s Office Facebook page on Friday, September 11, as he outlined security, governance reform and constitutional negotiations among his priorities heading into the autumn.
“Security continues to be very much at the top of my list, and the work that we’ve been preparing for some time to transform the security and justice sectors will continue in the months ahead,” he said.
The Governor said the work would be advanced in close collaboration with Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. Natalio Wheatley, Cabinet and other stakeholders.
Governance also remains a priority, with Pruce planning to issue another progress report examining the Government’s implementation of reforms stemming from the Commission of Inquiry.
“I will shortly bring forward my progress report, which considers the work that has been taken forward to implement the Government’s reforms foreseen in the Commission of Inquiry,” he said.
Pruce also pointed to the continuing constitutional negotiations between the BVI and United Kingdom governments.
He said his role was to sit between the two delegations and assist with advancing the discussions towards a successful conclusion.
Turning to his extension, Pruce said: “I also wanted to share, and for me this is great news, that I’m absolutely delighted that my own tenure here has been extended by one year. So, I will be in this role until January 2028.”
“It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to work here for longer, and hopefully during that time continue to provide the best possible service I can to the people of the Virgin Islands,” he added.
Pruce was appointed Governor in June 2023 to succeed John Rankin CMG. He arrived in the Territory in January 2024 and was sworn into office on January 29, 2024.
