Formal constitutional negotiations between the Virgin Islands and the United Kingdom began on today Tuesday, 14 July in Road Town, marking the next phase of the Territory’s constitutional review process.
Head of the UK delegation Nicholas Wareham MVO said his team wants to understand what constitutional changes are needed.
“My team and I are here this week to listen, to ask, to understand, to work out what constitutional changes are needed, so we and the Government of the Virgin Islands can effectively serve all the people of these beautiful islands, today and in the years to come,” Wareham said.
Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. Natalio Wheatley recently said the aim is to secure a modern Constitution that reflects the aspirations of Virgin Islanders, strengthens democratic governance and provides for greater self-government while maintaining the Territory’s partnership with the UK.
Negotiations are expected to continue in the UK later this year and conclude by the end of 2026. The agreed constitutional amendments are expected to be prepared for enactment in 2027.
Premier Wheatley also asked residents to pray for the Virgin Islands negotiating team as the talks progress.
