Deputy Premier Julian Fraser has acknowledged the complaints surrounding prolonged roadworks in District Three and sections of District One, but said people will always find something to complain about.

“As you know how people are, there will always be something to complain about,” Fraser said while addressing the issue in the House of Assembly.

Fraser, who is also the Representative for the Third District, said he is prepared to face the criticism while doing what he believes is right and best for residents.

However, he acknowledged that complaints about potholes, heavy dust and difficult driving conditions were justified.

“It’s one complaint after another, after another, after another, and they are justified complaints,” he stated.

The roadworks form part of a project stretching from the West End Ferry Terminal to the Road Town Ferry Terminal. According to Fraser, approximately 90 per cent of the roadway falls within the Third District.

He identified the stretch between Palestina and Sea Cows Bay as the most contentious section.

Fraser explained that the existing concrete surface had to be removed because the roadbed was compromised. Layers of cement were then applied to prepare a sustainable base for the new surface.

He said vehicles travelling along the unfinished roadway caused significant dust, while efforts to wet the surface offered only temporary relief because of the intense heat.

Repeated wetting also contributed to the formation of potholes, requiring the roadway to be graded again.

Fraser said the situation began improving late last week when the Government commenced paving one day earlier than anticipated.

“I think it’s a huge relief,” he said, adding that the progress should result in “smooth sailing” for motorists if the work continues as planned.

Fraser, who is also the Minister for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, said he hopes the paving continues as scheduled.
