Sixteen-year-old hurdler Taraji George will be the Virgin Islands’ sole athlete at the Dakar 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Senegal, competing in the women’s 100m hurdles.
The BVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC) announced that George is scheduled to compete on November 8 at 10:05 a.m. BVI time, or 2:05 p.m. in Dakar. The Games run from October 31 to November 13.
“As the only athlete representing the British Virgin Islands, I have the opportunity to showcase my talent and compete alongside some of the best young athletes in the world,” George said.
The BVIAA athlete said the experience would extend beyond competition, offering opportunities to build friendships and learn about different cultures.
“Most importantly, I want to make myself, my mom and my coaches proud,” she stated.
“I’m truly proud and grateful to be a part of this historic moment and to represent my territory on such a big stage. The experience would push me to work even harder towards my goal and achieving greater things in sports.”
George will travel with Chef de Mission Ericca Frederick and Team Official Tameeka George. The team is due to leave the BVI on November 5 and return on November 15.
BVIOC President Ephraim Penn arrived in Dakar on October 30, ahead of the opening ceremony on October 31.
