The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is mourning the death of Sergeant Calvin Cockburn, who succumbed to injuries sustained in an omnibus accident while visiting his homeland, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Cockburn, 50, of Greiggs, died at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, 16 September. He was among the passengers seriously injured when an omnibus crashed along the La Croix public road last week, according to reports from St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
“The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force joins the family, friends and loved ones of Police Sergeant #148 Calvin Cockburn in mourning his untimely passing,” the Force stated.
Cockburn enlisted in the RVIPF on 18 May 2001 and was promoted to sergeant in 2012.
During his career, he served in Beat and Patrol, the Special Investigations Unit, the Case Management Unit, the East End/Long Look Police Station and the Virgin Gorda/Anegada Police Division.
He most recently served in the Criminal Investigations Department.
The RVIPF remembered Cockburn as a knowledgeable, dedicated and respectful officer who made a meaningful contribution to the organisation.
“His respectful approach to leadership and his commitment to developing those under his guidance were among the qualities that defined his service,” the Force stated.
The Commissioner of Police, senior management and members of the RVIPF extended condolences to Cockburn’s family, friends and loved ones.
“His service will be remembered, and his presence will not be forgotten,” the Force stated.
