Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. Natalio Wheatley will lead a public-private financial services trade mission to India from August 24 to 31, aimed at attracting new business and expanding the Virgin Islands’ presence in the Indian market.
The trip comes as Premier Wheatley continues to face criticism over his frequent overseas travel.
Opposition Leader Marlon Penn, when questioned about the India mission during the Talking Points programme on Monday, said he had only heard whispers about the trip.
Penn said he had not received information concerning the cost of the mission, its objectives or other details.
According to a Government Information Service (GIS) press release issued today Tuesday August 18, Premier Wheatley will present the delegation on Wednesday.
During the mission, Virgin Islands officials will visit New Delhi, GIFT City, Mumbai and Bengaluru for regulatory discussions, industry meetings, business-to-business engagements and BVI financial services roadshows.
The mission is also intended to strengthen institutional relationships and generate qualified business leads for BVI service providers.
Officials are seeking to establish relationships with Indian regulators and financial institutions, increase awareness of the BVI’s financial services offerings and create opportunities for long-term partnerships.
The delegation will promote the Territory’s expertise in corporate structuring, investment funds, private wealth, financial technology and cross-border business.
Following the mission, the Government and industry partners will coordinate follow-up discussions with prospective clients and institutions, with the aim of converting the contacts made into measurable business opportunities for the Virgin Islands.
