The People’s Leadership Movement (PLM) has launched a free school lunch programme for eligible children attending the Francis Lettsome and Willard Wheatley Primary Schools.
The initiative is being spearheaded by the PLM’s District 7 Committee in the constituency represented by Premier and Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Chairman Dr. Natalio Wheatley.
According to a PLM press release issued today, September 22, the programme is intended to assist families struggling to provide daily lunches for their children.
District 7 Committee President Kevon Lettsome, who is said to be the PLM’s prospective candidate for District 7, said he witnessed the need firsthand and could not ignore the impact hunger has on children’s concentration, energy and participation in school.
"I have seen this need in District 7 with my own eyes, and we could not look away. When a child is hungry, it shows in their focus, their energy and their smile," Lettsome stated.
He added, “Our children are the future of these Virgin Islands, and if we want them to reach that future, we must make sure they are fed today."
He described the programme as a promise to parents and children that they are not alone and that the committee will support them.
PLM leader Mark Vanterpool praised Lettsome and the committee for acting before the next election.
“They saw a need, and they acted. That is what the People’s Leadership Movement stands for: real people, real solutions and real progress that families can feel,” Vanterpool said.
