The Government has reported that prices for selected essential goods remained broadly stable under its cost-of-living relief initiative, which ended more than a month ago.
According to the Government in a press release on September 10, the overall cost of the monitored basket did not increase during the three-month initiative, which ran from May 1 to July 31, 2026.
The Ministry of Financial Services, Economic Development and Digital Transformation said a technical team monitored 46 essential items, representing 185 products and brands, at retailers across the Territory.
Although prices varied by product and retailer, the Ministry said the findings showed that its customs and port-related concessions were reflected in generally stable shelf prices.
The relief package was introduced after rising global fuel prices increased freight and import costs, placing further pressure on households and businesses. It included the Protected Basket of Goods Initiative, temporary customs and port concessions and assistance with electricity bills.
Despite the intervention, residents continue to raise concerns about the high cost of food, electricity, fuel and other necessities. The Government has also faced criticism that its relief measures have not gone far enough to ease the burden on struggling families.
Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. Natalio Wheatley and Minister for Financial Services, Economic Development and Digital Transformation Lorna Smith met supermarket representatives and other stakeholders on September 4 to assess the initiative and discuss whether it should continue.
Representatives from the BVI Chamber of Commerce, BVI Electricity Corporation, BVI Ports Authority and His Majesty’s Customs also attended.
Further reviews of pricing, import and shopping data are now underway. According to government, the findings will guide a decision on whether the initiative will be continued, adjusted or replaced with more targeted assistance.
