Former Premier of Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) Michael Misick, former Cabinet minister McAllister Hanchell and attorney Thomas “Chal” Misick are expected to be taken to Grace Bay Police Station shortly after being sentenced to prison in the landmark corruption case.
In report filed by Hayden Boyce - SUN Publisher & Editor-in-Chief, it was stated that, the three men remained inside the Supreme Court on Friday afternoon speaking with their attorneys, police officers, family members and close friends following the conclusion of the sentencing hearing.
Several armed police officers were present in the courtroom as arrangements were made for the convicted men to be taken into custody to begin serving their sentences.
According to the report, the atmosphere inside the courtroom was emotional, with some supporters visibly upset and others struggling to come to terms with the outcome. Several people were seen crying, while others stood silently at the back of the courtroom appearing stunned by the sentences handed down by Justice Rajendra Narine.
"Misick received an effective sentence of four years and 26 days in prison, Hanchell was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and Chal Misick received an effective sentence of four years," the report stated.
The sentencing brings to a close one chapter of the most significant corruption prosecution in Turks and Caicos Islands history, although appeals and confiscation proceedings are still expected.
