The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is urging farmers and fishers across the Virgin Islands to take precautionary measures as the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season gets underway.

The department stated that, the hurricane season began on June 1 and will run until November 30, with residents encouraged to secure property, equipment and other critical assets.

Livestock farmers are being advised to ensure their animals are up to date with treatments, maintain adequate supplies of feed in secure locations, and stock essential veterinary and medical supplies. The department also recommends completing repairs to fencing and other structures ahead of any storm threat.

In the event of a hurricane warning, livestock should not be kept in enclosed structures. Farmers are also encouraged to harvest mature crops early to reduce potential losses from strong winds, heavy rainfall and flooding.

Fishers are being advised to remove pots and other fishing gear from the sea and secure vessels on land where possible. Alternatively, vessels should be sheltered in designated safe areas.

The department also recommends securing loose materials and maintaining an inventory of equipment and machinery to assist with recovery efforts if needed.

Farmers and fishers were told to review or update their disaster preparedness and recovery plans, monitor weather updates from reliable sources and remain vigilant throughout the hurricane season.
