NAGICO Insurances has reaffirmed its commitment to youth development in the Virgin Islands with a donation of $10,000 to the Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) following the successful staging of its inaugural 2-Mile Run/Walk With A Purpose on Saturday, June 6.
The donation was presented by Shaquilla Smith, Manager, NAGICO Insurances to Deputy Director of YEP, Bianca Dougan at the completion of the event at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HSCC) Campus, Paraquita Bay and will support the organization's ongoing efforts to provide free after-school programmes, mentorship opportunities and positive developmental experiences for young people across the Territory.
More than 250 participants took part in the community event, which brought together families, fitness enthusiasts, corporate partners and supporters of all ages. The youngest participant was just four years old, while the eldest participant was over 80 years old, demonstrating the broad community appeal of the initiative.
Managing Director, Shan Mohamed, said the company was proud to partner with YEP and invest in programmes that create opportunities for young people.
"We believe that supporting our youth is one of the most meaningful investments we can make in the future of the Virgin Islands. Every young person deserves access to opportunities, guidance and positive influences that can help them realize their full potential. This donation will go a long way in supporting YEP's efforts to empower and uplift our youth, and ultimately help save and transform lives through education, mentorship and meaningful engagement," Mohamed said.
The event also featured remarks from At-Large Representative and Executive Director of YEP, Honourable Stacey Mather, who spoke passionately about YEP's vision and the positive impact that community partnerships can have on youth development throughout the Territory.
As part of the day's activities, six participants were recognized with trophies for outstanding performances, including the fastest male and female runners, fastest male and female runners under 17, and fastest male and female runners under 12.
This year marks 21 years of service for YEP, an organization that has positively impacted countless young people through educational support, mentorship and personal development programmes.
Honourable Mather noted that the event helped shine a spotlight on the organization's work and mission.
"When corporate BVI shows up for our youth in such numbers, our reach increases. NAGICO has further elevated our profile and allowed more businesses to see the great work we do," Mather stated.
Dougan also extended sincere gratitude to NAGICO and everyone who supported the walk/run fundraiser.
“I was truly encouraged by the incredible turnout and community support shown throughout the event. We are honoured to have received this donation, which will help us continue providing free after-school programmes and valuable opportunities for the young people we serve. As a nonprofit organization, every dollar makes a difference, and we are grateful for this generous contribution,” Dougan stated.
NAGICO extends special appreciation to Stephanie Ross-Penn, Head of the HLSCC’s Athletic Association, and her team for their invaluable assistance with race timing, route management and bib distribution. Kay Reddy, Road Race Director was also instrumental in the success of the event.
