Sports, entertainment and literary tourism are playing an increasingly important role in the Virgin Islands' tourism strategy as government looks to diversify the sector beyond its traditional offerings.

Speaking recently, Premier and Minister of Finance Hon. Dr Natalio Wheatley pointed to several events that have received government support and helped attract visitors to the Territory.

Among them were the Kings of the Court Caribbean Basketball Championships, won by Team Tola, and the 4th Clasico Torneo Softball Tournament, which he described as a success.

The Premier also highlighted continued support for events such as the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival, Christmas in July and Foxy's New Year's Eve Party.

Wheatley further revealed that interviews for members of the Gaming Commission are expected to begin before the end of June, bringing the Territory a step closer to establishing a gaming industry.

“Diversifying our tourism product remains a goal of this administration,” he stated.

Heritage Tourism Push

The Premier said government is also investing in heritage and cultural tourism as part of efforts to strengthen the Virgin Islands' tourism appeal.

He announced that restoration and redevelopment of the Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum and Art Gallery will begin during the second half of 2026 after funding was identified for the project.

According to Wheatley, the restoration will preserve an important historical site while enhancing its role as both a tourism attraction and educational institution.

The Premier also noted that Cabinet has approved plans to transform the Old Administration Building into a National Museum.

“Preserving our heritage is not only about protecting the past but educating future minds,” Wheatley said.
