Deputy Speaker Hon. Dr Karl Dawson joined parliamentarians from across the Caribbean and the United Kingdom for an artificial intelligence workshop in Anguilla from June 21 to 24.
Hosted by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association United Kingdom and UNESCO Caribbean, the workshop examined the growing use of artificial intelligence in parliamentary work and public administration.
Participants shared their experiences using AI within their respective parliaments and considered the legislative and governance implications of emerging technologies.
Dawson said the workshop provided valuable insight into how AI could improve parliamentary efficiency, legislative reviews and the delivery of public services.
“The exchange of ideas among legislators was timely and necessary as governments continue to adapt to the rapid advancement of digital technologies,” he stated.
According to the House of Assembly, participants also reviewed legislation relating to AI, data protection, cybersecurity, digital procurement and online safety.
The exercise encouraged lawmakers to consider how existing legal frameworks may need to evolve to address both the opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence.
The House said Dawson’s participation demonstrated the Virgin Islands’ continued engagement in regional and international discussions on innovation, governance and responsible digital transformation in parliament.
