FIFA President Gianni Infantino officially opened the BVI Football Association’s Technical Centre in Greenland on Friday, 25 September, following the installation of a new artificial pitch funded by FIFA.
BVIFA President Avanell “Clarkie” Morton said the association plans to develop the facility further so it can host local league matches and international games.
Acting Premier Vincent O. Wheatley welcomed Infantino and thanked FIFA for its support. He commended the BVIFA for managing the pitch installation and other work at the centre, as well as running training programmes for different age groups.
Wheatley said the facility and those programmes would help develop local players and raise the Virgin Islands’ standing in regional and international football.
“An investment in sports and supporting facilities is an investment in health,” said Wheatley, who is also Minister for Health and Social Development. “It is an investment in youth development.”
He said football helps young people build discipline, teamwork and a sense of belonging. Wheatley also thanked the contractors and others who worked on the project, expressing hope that the pitch and the stadium eventually planned for the site would serve future generations.
