(PLTM) - VG United saw off the challenge of Rebels FC on Sunday April 30th, 2023, with a 4-2 victory, which leapfrogged them over their opponents and into the post season tournament.

The game was a must win for both teams as only two points split them ahead of the game, with Rebels sitting in fourth on 35 and VG fifth on 33, but it was the Virgin Gorda outfit who took the victory with Sheldon Toney giving them an early lead, opening the scoring in just the 10th minute.

Johari Lacey equalised six minutes later, but a late first half onslaught gave VG the edge, as first Thomas Albert put them back ahead in the 32nd minute, before Toney added another goal in the 40th minute to make it 3-1.

Rebels were then handed a lifeline just before the break when VG conceded an own goal. However, early in the second half, Joel Mars pretty much sealed the win, making it 4-2.

“We had to battle and cut out their offensive cross field moves; we were also able to win the midfield contest and dominate the game," stated Manager Jermain Abrams.

He added, “We stuck to our game plan, nullified their strength and apart from a couple sloppy pieces of defending we deserved the win, and our young team now looks forward to the post season and the Big Four!”

Coach of the Rebels, Lataoya Sue was philosophical in defeat.

“This season was a season filled with test and trials game after game but what I love about my team Rebels despite the odds and all those test and trials they keep showing up and play their hearts out every time," Sue said.

VG now has 36 points, with one game left, whilst Rebels have 35 and have finished their campaign in fifth.

The Wolues are in third, Sugar Boys second and of course One Love, the Champions.

Sugar Boys v VG United takes place next weekend to conclude the regular season and then the Big Four Knock Out begins on 13th May with One Love v VG united and Sugar Boys v Wolues on the 14th May.

The President’s Cup final, between the two winners is scheduled for 21st May.
