(PLTM) - The results for the 2023 general elections are in and no political party has secured enough seats to form the next Government, paving the way for negotiations over the next several hours to hammer out a deal.
Based on the results announced this evening, April 24, the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) secured six seats; the National Democratic Party (NDP), three seats; Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM), three seats and the Progressives United (PU), one seat.
The results mean that none of the parties have secured the required seven-seat majority in the 13-member House of Assembly (HoA) to form the next Government on their own.
As a result, the BVI's next Government will be a coalition administration.
It should be noted that following a no confidence motion against the VIP earlier this year that led to the removal of Andrew Fahie as Premier, a multi-party grouping formed the Government of National Unity comprising of elected members from the VIP, NDP and PVIM.
It could be several hours before the next coalition Government emerges and a Premier is named.
