(PLTM) - Virgin Islands Party (VIP) First District Candidate, Dr. Karl Dawson intends to focus to pursue the strengthening of the economy within district, through branding and developmental projects.
During his campaign launch on Sunday, March 19, Dr. Dawson indicated that Sopers Hole and the West area have a special charm that visitors already love to experience.
He pointed to the northside from Smuggler's Cove to Apple Bay with it's lovely beaches, landscape, dining and accommodation opportunities whcih can only be enhanced when the areas are marketed together and build a better visitor experience through cleanliness and offering more activities.
“Carrot Bay is not to be left out because it is already the cultural capital of the BVI. We intend to build on that reputation and create greater opportunities for persons in the district,” Dr. Dawson stated.
He noted that he has received positive feedback to the coordination of a weekly culture day at Carrot Bay that will put on display the fresh fruit and vegetables produced in the area by our excellent farmers.
“Seafood harvested by our skilled fisherfolk will also be on sale both raw and cooked; cooked because the plan calls for our cultural foods to be available and spiced up by some of our local music. I believe that this plan will attract both residents and visitors to the district and create greater profitability for those producers in these areas. Brothers and sisters this is not a pipe dream,” Dr. Dawson stated.
He believes that this plan could be implemented within four months of taking office.
Blue Economy
Dr. Dawson also expressed the view that every district has a role to play in maximizing the blue economy and therefore must support each other in that regard.
“When we consider the interest and skill of our young fisherfolk like Joey Samuel, Fransym Mulan, Jordan Romney and numerous others they have the potential to harvest even more fish within our 200-mile marine economic zone but they need a supportive government and a champion to fight for the right laws, resources and training to make this bright future a reality,” Dr. Dawson stated.
He added, “I intend to fight for you so that we can walk into that bright future together. This can happen if we move forward together.”
Dr. Dawson told the gathering that another major project that must be completed is the West End Ferry Terminal not only because it is an economic hub in the district, but it is a major port of entry to the territory.
“As such its importance is not only for the district but it has significance for our national tourism product. In the first district and other parts of the BVI we have visitors coming to us who are paying significant amounts of money to stay in our villas, hotels and charter boats,” Dr. Dawson said.
He added, “They should have a first-class arrival experience at a facility that allows for smooth and timely flow of individuals and their belongings. Of course, all of us, the residents also want an experience at that port that is comfortable and meets our needs. This project is already underway. What you need is a voice to stay on them like white on rice. I will be that voice.”
Dr. Dawson also addressed social programmes for seniors, health and youth development for the district.
