(PLTM) - Former Finance Minister and Health Minister, Ronnie Skelton said he is contesting the upcoming general elections for Premiership because of the people believe that he has what it takes to pull the Territory out of the situation it is in.

He was at the time responding to questions at a press conference on Friday February 24, as to why a younger, Melvin 'Mitch' Turnbull was not chosen as the Chairman of Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM).

"I am happy to be at home, but the people are calling for some experience and they feel that I have that level of experience in order to assist this country out of the problems that it's presently in. That is why I am here nothing else," he said.

The known astute businessman, said that in fact, he needs the young people help to build the country.

" …If you know my history you will know I hand over things to young people because that is what I believe is what will help us to build a country...I commend my young leader (Turnbull) and all of these people around me," Skelton said.

Mentioning the story Biblical story of Moses, he said: "they told him (Moses) to get the young and the old together. Young for their strength and the old for their wisdom. That is all that is happening here today."

Thus far, PVIM has seven candidates on its slate.

Reasons For Silence On Major Issues

Meanwhile, Skelton has been accused of being silent on the many national issues which the Territory has been faced with over the past four years, after his lost at the polls in February 2019.

"If you know me I am very much interested in the development of my country, I am not interested in confusion. I run away from confusion. So if they are issues that are confronting the country, those people who know me well, if they seek my advice and my voice, I lend it to them," he said in response to questions from the media.

Skelton who was also accused of 'disappearing' following the National Democratic Party's (NDP) lost at the 2007 polls said, "But I have no intention of getting out there adding to the level of confusion that is there. For the last four years I have been here at Skelton Group of Companies, developing Skelton businesses."

The former Health Minister continued, "Like you (reporter) said I served on the RDA (Recovery Development Agency) for the past two plus years, I have resigned since then, I have served on the Constitution Reform Commission, and I continue to give advice to elected and non-elected members of the society."

Skelton told the media that while they may not hear his voice on the media, "I am very active, and I am very concerned about my country."
