(PLTM) - The Althea Scatliffe Primary School (ASPS) has been cleared by the Cabinet of the Virgin Islands to be demolished.

The building, located in John’s Hole, had been shuttered since June by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, and Sports after it failed an inspection.

Cabinet at its meeting on December 9, decided that a new school be rebuilt and that the Financial Secretary assign a Board of Condemnation for the demolition of the building.

The Cabinet also approved $24,000 to be approved to purchase three 40' containers to be used for storage of materials salvaged from the building. The Cabinet brief of the meeting did not indicate how much funding was set aside for the demolition of the building, nor was there information shared about going to tender for the construction of the new building.

The inspection report had recommended that the use of the school building be suspended immediately.

A primary concern in the report is the structural integrity of the building. Based on this information, the Ministry agreed that the best option is to err on the side of caution by prioritising the safety of students, faculty, and staff.

The decision has been made to close the building effective Friday, 17th June, 2022 at 4:30 p.m. until further notice.

Students and faculty are since being accommodated at other schools.

According to the Ministry, this morning the principal, faculty, and staff of the school were notified of this decision.
