(PLTM) - At least two United Kingdom (UK) teams are to be deployed to the Virgin Islands to review law enforcement and justice along with ensuring a vetting process for officers in the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), Customs, Immigration and Prison Service staff.

The UK Police National Vetting team will conduct vetting of all officers of the security agencies while His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) will lead the review panel of the law enforcement and justice systems in the BVI.

HMICFRS will also be part of a panel to ensure that the RVIPF and, as necessary, other enforcement agencies have the necessary facilities and powers.

It is unclear at this stage who will be footing the bill for the UK teams to undertake work in the Territory.

Governor John Rankin disclosed the UK involvement in his first quarterly review of the “Framework for Implementation of the Recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) Report and Other Reforms”.

The CoI report had recommended the vetting and review of the security agencies and alluded to the possible of corruption at the Customs department.

A few months ago, Commissioner of Customs Wade Smith was sent on leave and the Governor disclosed in his quarterly report that an investigation has been launched into Customs.
