(PLTM) - Former Deputy Premier Dr. Kendrick Pickering announced yesterday evening, September 22, at the Stickit that he will be contesting in the next general election, vying for one of the four At-Large seats.
The former Deputy Premier and Minster for Labour and Natural Resources spoke to those gathered under the theme, “Time to Reset”, where he discussed the current issues confronting the Virgin Islands. Dr. Pickering submitted that he is willing to aid in improving the way of life for the people through service as a public official.
“I have spent a lot of time thinking about where I am, what I can do to help my community, and what I can do to help my country,” Dr. Pickering announced.
He noted that while some persons have argued that he “has had his time in politics” and should take a back seat from the electoral political sphere, others have held opposing views.
“There is a flip side to it. I’ve also heard people say that this country is in a difficult position, and we need a couple of experienced, knowledgeable people to help navigate us through these difficult times,” Dr. Pickering asserted.
Dr. Pickering has been involved in electoral politics for some 20 years, and owing to this, he believes that he is confident and possesses not only the experience, but the expertise to contribute to the development of the Virgin Islands.
The veteran politician also said, “I am prepared to do my part to help my community and to help my country.”
He added, “Since I have spoken here on April 6, I have had a change in my mind about my approach to politics, and I am announcing this evening that I will run in the next election as an At-large Territorial candidate.”
Despite this, Dr. Pickering said that he will be placing his support behind a candidate in the 7th District who is “fresh, full of energy, and can take on the issues in this district”.
Currently, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. Natalio Wheatley is the Representative for the 7th District. This seat is highly sought after, and a number of candidates previously announced their intention to run in the 7th Electoral District.
Elections are constitutionally due by May 2023.
