Premier Wheatley Heads Delegation For Inter-VI Talks

(PLTM) - In keeping with the decision made by the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) and the British Virgin Islands to deepen and strengthen their relationship, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. Natalio Wheatley is set to lead a delegation to the United States Virgin Islands today September 22 for the Ninth Meeting of the Inter-Virgin Islands Council (IVIC). 

The object of the council is to provide formal negotiation opportunities for the BVI and the USVI where discussions on enhancing their relationship is a priority.

According to a press release “The Premier of the BVI and Governor of the USVI, as well as key policymakers in their cabinets to explore ways to enhance the relations between the two territories.”

Premier Wheatley and Governor Albert Bryan will co-chair the IVIC and reports from three of 12 standing committees in areas of shared interest between the BVI and USVI will be presented.

The three committees that are scheduled to present are: the Committee on Energy and Utilities, the Committee on Tourism and the Committee on Pleasure Boating and Sports Fishing, according to permanent secretary Mrs. Carolyn Stoutt Igwe.

The BVI delegation lead by Premier Wheatley includes Deputy Premier and Minister for Communication and Works Hon. Kye Rymer, Minister for Health and Social Development Hon. Marlon Penn, Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Hon. Melvin “Mitch” Turnbull, Attorney General Hon. Dawn Smith, Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Office Mrs. Carolyn Stoutt Igwe, Financial Secretary Mr. Jeremiah Frett, and other senior public officers.  

The Inter Virgin Islands Council was established on Saturday, May 29, 2004, when former USVI Governor, Dr. Charles Turnbull and Chief Minister, Dr. D. Orlando Smith, OBE, signed a joint Memorandum of Understanding. The Council’s first meeting convened on St. Croix in April 2005.
