(PLTM) - History has been made in Virgin Gorda when the first female, Mrs. Monel Nickie, was appointed to the post of District Officer.

Some of her responsibilities will include coordinating government activities in accordance with meeting the departmental objectives of the Sister Islands Programme.

The overarching goal of the Sister Islands Programme is to administer sustainable projects to improve the delivery of Government services.

According to a press release issued by his Office, “Deputy Governor Mr. David Archer Jr. congratulated Mrs. Nickie and stated that her appointment was historic and worth celebrating as she becomes the first woman to serve as District Officer for Virgin Gorda.”

He said that, “While we acknowledge this milestone, it is also important to make note of Mrs. Nickie’s unique strengths and vigour which awarded her this appointment for the betterment of the Virgin Gorda community.”

He also commended the former District Officer Verne Wheatley, who previously served in this capacity for 25 years.

He extended gratitude to him, and stated that Mrs. Nickie will benefit from, and build on his legacy.

According to Nickie, “The strength of our success as a Territory lies in our ability to work together and serve one another. I am committed to contributing to my community in a positive way and look forward to our continued growth and development.”

Previously, the incoming District Officer acted as an educator where she was an adjunct lecturer at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College as well as a primary school teacher in Virgin Gorda.

Mrs. Nickie is also the founder and director of MOSADI, a women empowerment initiative that promotes holistic wellness through offering spiritual, emotional, physical, financial, and social mentoring.
