(PLTM) - Earlier this week, Deputy Premier and Minister for Communications and Works Hon. Kye Rymer commissioned a new State-Of-The-Art Waste Water Treatment Plant in Cane Garden that will aid in alleviating some of the issues associated with sewerage in the area.

In 2019, the Ministry of Communication and Works undertook the building of a modified Waste Water Treatment Plant to replace the existing plant that was operating, but not functioning at optimal capacity to adequately service the needs of this community.

Phase 2 involved replacing and installing of new gravity and pumping lines, lift stations, and a backup generator.

“Sewerage collection, management and treatment is an underlining problem, not just here in Cane Garden Bay, but all throughout our islands. Dilapidated infrastructure, aging pipelines, a growing population, that add stress to the systems, are all key reasons why it is important and imperative to modernise our sewerage network, Hon. Kye Rymer stated at the Commissioning ceremony.

He also revealed that by the end of July 2022, the process for repairing of the Burt Point Waste Water Treatment Plant will be initiated to manage and update the sewerage network in the Road Town area.

In addition, bids for the Paraquita Bay Waste Water Treatment Plant’s repairs are currently being reviewed.

Hon. Rymer continued by stating “Presently, we are undertaking works in the East End/Long Look area to remedy their ongoing sewerage woes. Further, we have issued and will be issuing several tenders for works in the East End – Long Look area to get that problem resolved once and for all.”

He also acknowledged former Premier Andrew Fahie who was responsible for allocating the funds for upgrading the Cane Garden Bay Waste Water Treatment Plant. The total cost of this project is $1,799,515.15.

“Yes, we can plan, but without the funds we cannot execute. I thank the Minister of Finance and the Ministry for the funds required, although we may not always get all that we need,” Hon. Rymer said in his address.
