(PLTM) - The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is investigating the shooting death of a male in Huntums Ghut.
Relatives and friends identified the deceased as Le Shaughn Smith, a heavy equipment business owner and co-owner of a local boating company. According to police, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the area of the neighbourhood gas station around 10 pm on Thursday, February 24. When BVI Platinum News arrived on the scene, police had cordoned off the area and dozens of residents lined the street.
Back in 2016, Smith and another man faced charges of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking in connection with a $24M drug bust in Virgin Islands waters.
Smith is the second homicide victim for this year. On January 30, Jaquan Thomas, 29, was found unresponsive outside a residential area in Little Apple Bay following reports of shots fired.
Last year the BVI recorded six murders, the last of which was Jaimez Stoutt, a U.S Army veteran, who was shot and killed inside Crystal’s Nightclub in December.
