(PLTM) - A number of businesses which fall under entertainment and accommodation are to remain temporarily closed under the new curfew order which kicks in on Sunday May 24.

These include hotels, villas, public swimming pools, cinemas, gyms, bars and night clubs. According to government, this is to allow for the development of the necessary safe distancing protocols needed to control, suppress and prevent the spread of COVID-19 and to protect all persons in the Territory.

Premier Andrew Fahie told reporters that this will remain so until they are advised otherwise by health professionals, noting that he is making decisions to keep the people safe even if it’s not popular.

“And if it could fit within that garment with what we have been told by health professionals and in our conscience that you are going to be safe, then we are going to do it. That’s why we raise it from 20 (persons) to a maximum of 50 but 64 sq. ft. per person because we see the sign,” he said.

He made the point that the curfew was relaxed over time and the time allowed on the beaches.

“We saw the signs that would allow it. If the signs are there from health professionals and others, we will make sure we move ahead,” he stated.

The Premier added, “But if those signs are not there, and even if they are (and) our instincts tell us as leaders that it’s not the right time, we have to make the call. I cannot answer which one will go on or not, but I know once it fits within that regime of what I just stated, it will be considered.”

Government has stated that all other businesses and establishments may open and are allowed to operate during the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. provided that they have been inspected, approved and certified by the Social Distancing Task Force.

Business owners are reminded to adhere to the health, social distancing and safety protocols as prescribed in the Public Health (COVID-19 Control and Suppression Measures) (No. 2) Order, 2020. The Social Distancing Task Force will be conducting unannounced inspections to determine the level of compliance by business owners.

Business owners are also reminded to ensure that provisions are made for staff and employees to report to and leave work within the imposed curfew hours.

Businesses that have not been inspected by the Social Distancing Task Force are to remain closed to the public until they are given the approval.
