Recent Home Deaths Not Linked To COVID-19 - Health Minister

(PLTM) - The Health Minister, Hon. Carvin Malone has assured that none of the recent home deaths in the Territory are linked to COVID-19.

Instances of persons being found dead in their home has increased concerns that there might be a link to COVID-19. The Health Minister explained, "Some of the tests that were conducted were for the postmortem testing and so forth. So they were all negative so far. So none of the deaths reported, have been reported to me or the Territory as being as a result of COVID-19," Hon. Malone stated.

After testing 161 persons locally with lab results confirmed by regionally, the BVI has recorded no new cases as of Thursday, May 21. The BVI has 8 positive cases to date, 6 persons who recovered, one death and one active case where the person remains in isolation.

Having largely contained COVID-19 transmission within the Territory and cautiously managed the internal reopening process in a manner that promotes public safety, Hon. Malone said that the Territory is now looking towards the border re-opening process.

He said it must also be carefully handled in order to guard against an upsurge of the virus.

According to the Health Minister, a precautionary approach remains important in the context of 4.8 million cases and 319,000 deaths recorded globally, with approximately two million recoveries. Close to 21,000 positive cases are recorded in the Caribbean, with 784 deaths and 9450 recoveries.
