(PLTM) - Members of the British Virgin Islands public, have been called upon to report business owners who are failing to adhere to the 6 am to 8 pm curfew, imposed by the Government due to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
That call is coming from Deputy Commissioner of Police Alwin James.
“We are asking members of the community who are seen violators of the business curfew to dial into our 311 number and report it and officers will respond,” he remarked, on Monday 23 March 2020 while speaking during live interview on a social media.
“Those are summary offences under the Public Health Act, and those persons can be prosecuted and will be prosecuted for cases where it’s necessary,” he warned.
“It is a $1,000 fine and a 12 month- imprisonment. It is possible also that it may affect their operating license in terms of the future because we will report that information to Cabinet of the constant violators as it relates to this area.”
Only Business Curfew Meanwhile, he made it clear to the listening audience that the curfew was not for them.
“It’s not about restricting people’s movement; it’s about the services of businesses,” he said.
He added, “The police are going to take a sensible and pragmatic approach towards the enforcement of those restrictions, but we are asking persons to be compliant because it is also about their safety and security.”
The Deputy stated that with more boots on the ground and with the addition of the new officers coming soon, residents and the business community will benefit from the extra security measures being taken particularly during the business curfew hours.
