(PLTM) - Some public servants were happy to go on to better paying secondments because they were not being paid what they felt they deserved. This matter was acknowledged by Premier and Minister for Finance, Hon. Andrew Fahie, who explained that these situations could be rectified by Department Heads through simple recommendations.

The Premier's comment was made in response to a question from the audience at a Virgin Gorda public meeting on August 21, that addressed the fact that the pay on secondment is often better than that in the general public service.

The Premier, who agreed to the point, said that he believes in fair remuneration and that as an elected person, he is not the one that dictates salaries and wages. In fact, Hon. Fahie mentioned that he is currently championing certain cases.

"I have absolutely no problem paying a person, a professional, what they're worth, and remember that the elected official doesnt dictate salaries. Since I'm there I'm fighting certain cases. I cant understand why this person with certain qualifications is in this grade. So that system that's there needs relooking," the Premier said.

In noting that the matter in some instances can be sorted easy with the recommendation of the Department Head, Hon. Fahie noted, "Then sometimes it just takes for the person that is over you to be fair to you and put you in the grade, just sign off on it, but some—only a few don't see why a person should get that money. We call them longhearted in our own culture."
