(PLTM) - The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has confirmed that one of the 2019 examinations was breached in Trinidad and Tobago. Now, students in the BVI and around the region are waiting anxiously to hear if a petition being circulated via Facebook, calling for the exam to be redone, will be adhered to.
In its May 16 statement, the Caribbean Examination Council announced that it has been made aware of a breach in examination security in Trinidad and Tobago. The organization said, "At this time we are working closely with the Trinidad Ministry of Education to conduct an investigation surrounding the report. Appropriate corrective action will be taken quickly to reinforce existing security measures and to mitigate any potential impact."
Since the breach came to light, a petition began circulating, calling for the entire region to resit the 2019 CSEC Math examination. As of Tuesday, May 21, the petition had garnered 5,243 signatures.
The author, who was identified as Trevor S., alleges that the breach involved certain actions by exam students during the course of the exam, that he further alleges were facilitated by the invigilator.
It was further alleged that there is an investigation into the matter since a video went viral.
Therefore, the petition calls for actions to be taken that resonates in all countries where CXC examinations are done.
"It would be unfair if these students are allowed a free pass, and equally unfair if only selected schools/students are allowed to resit a supplementary exam. The extent to which exams could have been scanned and shared, not only nationally, but regionally is unfathomable. Students could have been privy to the exam questions earlier than the start time and they could have sent these images on social media to their counterparts in other schools across the country and region," the petitioner suggests.
"Given the conditions and circumstances, it is only fair and just that ALL students in the entire region resit a supplementary Math exam which should be done before the end of the exam period, June 6th, 2019," the petition states.
Trevor S. further urged persons to sign the petition which will be sent to the Caribbean Examinations Council.
"Sign this petition to avoid unfairness and let's have a clean, unquestionable exam result in August 2019," he said.
