(PLTM) - As measles outbreaks are being recorded throughout the world, local health officials are shining the spotlight on the MMR vaccine, which is a vaccine against measles, mumps, and rubella, in an effort to protect the territory's population.

Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease, caused by the measles virus, and causes high fevers, runny nose, inflamed eyes, small white spots inside the mouth and rashes.

Reports suggest that Measles cases have risen by 300 percent in 2019 and as part of Vaccination Week activities, the BVI Health Services Authority will be stressing the importance of vaccination.

On Tuesday, April 23, “Vaccination Education on Wheels” will be held at 10:00 a.m. beginning at the Peebles Hospital parking lot. The public is being invited to attend and learn about the importance of immunisation and how it impacts the health of the community.

BVI Health Services Authority is also inviting persons to attend “vaccine educational sessions on MMR and HPV at the Road Town and Sea Cow’s Bay Health Centres on Wednesday, April 24.”

It was further indicated, via a public invitation, that a community outreach will also be held at the West End Ferry Dock on Thursday, April 25.

Finally, on Saturday, April 27 the week will culminate with a promotional walk which begins at the Nurse Iris O’Neal Health Centre at 06:00 a.m, and an immunisation outreach session at Trellis Bay beginning at 06:30 a.m.
