(PLTM) - Cheers erupted as Kelly Clarkson’s hit song “A Moment Like This” played and Miss BVI 2018, Ayana Phillips emerged onto the stage for the first time to be crowned as this year’s titleholder, and the British Virgin Islands’ representative in the 2018 Miss Universe pageant, to be held in Thailand.

The grand event commenced with the final walk of Miss BVI 2017, Khephra Sylvester, who received kudos for her decision to represent the Territory at the Miss Universe Pageant last year, despite the fact that the Territory and even Khephra were affected by the disasters.

In her farewell speech, Khephra, who following the hurricanes was relocated to the Cayman Islands as part of her employment requirement, said that she wanted to use the spotlight from the international pageant to draw attention to the Territory’s plight.

The Coronation

Gliding radiantly in a stunning beaded mermaid gown, that was fluted with feathers, Ayana, who was one of the contestants that tied in the first place position at the 2017 pageant, smiled warmly at the large crowd that flocked to share the crowning moment with her.

The new queen gracefully bowed as the former queen placed the crown upon her head, and in the process passed the title on.

Ayana, who is the Territory’s most popular female DJ – Lady Mix, was made aware that many of her fans were in the crowd, as they shouted encouraging messages. At various intervals, in show of support and adoration, the fans and recognized family members erupted in celebratory cheers and chant.

The outpour of support caused Ayana to take a quick break from her regal pose to do a little dance that attracted even more cheers.

When it was time for the new titleholder to give her first speech, she took the microphone and confidently introduced herself as Miss BVI 2018. Ayana then declared, “When it is your time you walk right into your blessings.”

Ayana said that being crowned was not just a blessing, but also an honor, and she thanked the Festivals and Fairs Committee for giving her the opportunity.

The coronation began with singing from Yohance Smith, Mr. Junior BVI.
