Several major government projects are unlikely to be completed before the next general election, with Prospect Reef Redevelopment and the rebuilding of Althea Scatliffe Primary School among those facing lengthy development timelines.

Claude Skelton Cline made the assessment during his radio programme this week, warning that the procurement, design and construction process could push the Prospect Reef project into 2028.

“Prospect Reef is not going to come on stream before the next general election,” he said. “Anybody telling you different, they are lying to you.”

Skelton Cline urged the government to spend up to $2 million to demolish derelict structures and clean the property while plans continue. He said this would provide work for excavator operators, demolition crews and cleaners while circulating money in the local economy.

He expressed similar doubts about the Althea Scatliffe Primary School project, noting that no tender has been issued.

“That’s not going to happen before election either,” he said, while acknowledging that the minister is working hard to advance the project.

Skelton Cline urged the government to continue repairing existing schools and ensure teachers and students have the resources needed for the September term.

The West End Ferry Terminal redevelopment and the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport expansion are also among the major projects he said will not be completed before the next general election.

Skelton Cline called on the government to prioritise achievable measures, including fixing the Territory’s water problems and finding practical ways to get money circulating in the local economy.
