(PLTM) - While providing the Territory with an update on current affairs on May 13, Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr. Natalio Wheatley affirmed his willingness to assist the United States in any follow up investigations relating to the arrest of former Premier Andrew Fahie, if required.

He stated during the question segment of the press conference that local law enforcement agencies have forged a strong relationship with law enforcement agencies from the United States and they have a history cooperating in managing international criminal activities.

“It happens all the time and information is often shared both ways. I would expect that if the United States needed assistance from our law enforcement officials here in conducting any investigations that our law enforcement here will assist. We support that. We want all forms of corruption and all forms of criminal activity to be rooted out of our society,” Dr. Wheatley added.

He also condemned drug usage and trafficking, gun crimes and human trafficking and explained that his government was fully in support of any operations which will mitigate these activities. He stated that he was willing to cooperate with the United States, as well as any neighbouring jurisdiction in addressing crime and violence

He announced that the Virgin Islands is a safe destination, and to maintain its safety, even the possibility of criminal activity will have to be mitigated.

“Government official 1” was portrayed as a compromised public official who wields a significant amount of authority and who could have potentially hindered the drug-trafficking scheme which led to Fahie’s arrest, according to a widely circulated affidavit produced by the United States District Court Southern District of Florida.

When asked if he was concerned that this individual was still performing their duties in a public capacity Premier Wheatley stated that while noting the revelations about “Government Official 1” , he was reassured by the work of local law enforcement agencies. He asserted that measures are being undertaken to investigate and address all forms of criminal activities occurring in the Virgin Islands.

“I am confident that our law enforcement agencies have been apprised of the particular situation. I am confident that they will be able to advise us in the national security council of any developments,” Dr. Wheatley noted.
