(PLTM) - Dozens of motorcyclists were stopped and questioned at a roadblock established by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) in what appeared to be a very targeted operation over the weekend.
Specifically, on Sunday, February 28, several police officers set up along Waterfront Drive in the area of the Road Town Roundabout, stopped, searched, and questioned mainly motorcyclists. BVI Platinum News observed that the officers requested supporting documentation for the bikes.
In some instances, the bikes were taken away and transported in the back of police vehicles to the Road Town station.
The police force has been hard-pressed to quell increasing concerns relating to the noise nuisance generated by motorcyclists with modified bikes. In the past four months, motorcyclists, more than other road users, have been injured and hospitalized as a result of accidents.
Additionally, with the increased level of firearm-related incidents in recent months, the public has called for more patrols along with stop and searches. In response, the RVIPF last week disclosed the deployment of officers to undertake roll and searches as well as on mobile and foot patrols in a ‘Clean the Streets’ Operation to cover commercial centers and primarily cash-based entities during business hours.
Traffic and drug offenders were the only arrests made so far. However, the teams are providing the needed reassurance to businesses and intelligence support to the officers who work behind the scene. In continuance of the Joint Task Force working relationship, Customs and Immigration officers will also join in these roll and search operations around the Territory to quell the recent rise in firearm-related incidences.
