(PLTM) - Premier Hon. Andrew Fahie wants the public to know that he is not afraid of scrutiny and debunked claims that he is a dictator.

In fact, the Finance Minister said that he is a nice guy.

“Your government is happy that the people of the Virgin Islands can once again speak freely about where we all want to see the BVI. I hear some people say we victimize; I yet to see it. Not one of us up here have that kind of mentality or personality. For sure not Fahie. I am a nice guy,” he said during an event in the Long Look area over the weekend.

He said public inspection will also help with the BVI’s push for self-determination through transparency.

“So, we welcome scrutiny whether ill-intended or genuine. We see scrutiny as an excellent opportunity to keep us as a government, in turn, this territory moving towards self-determination through transparency…,” he stated.

The Premier said that he continues to let the public know that he doesn’t run a dictatorship rather he runs an accelerated ship.

Hon. Fahie mentioned the many challenges his administration met upon taking office in February 2019, including the proposed $300M loan guarantee from the United Kingdom (UK), conditions which he said were not in the best interest of the people of the BVI; having to passed two budgets early, and then the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“So, from day one we knew that if the Virgin Islands were to remain in the hands of Virgin Islanders it meant unconventional leadership. A people with fresh minds, backbone and with the mindset that together we will shape the future of our territory and the lives of generations unborn,” he stated.

In the midst of some criticisms on the handling of the effects of COVID-19, Premier Fahie boasted about how well the BVI government is managing the situation compared to its neighbors.

“I have learned from the Minister of Natural Resources and Labour (Hon. Vincent Wheatley), is those who will criticize you for criticizing sake, intend not to fail at their job and it’s up to us to find out the areas where we are going good so that we don’t fail at ours,” he said.

Premier Fahie added, “when you look at the next-door neighbor, nothing against them, and you look at all the other countries that have more resources than us, that have more capacity to deal with COVID- 19 than us, and you see what this government has done with COVID- 19 you know is the hand of the Lord on us and this government is working to keep you the people safe.”
