(PLTM) - Barney Crook and his team aboard Airgasm took the overall and multihull honours as 12 boats competed in the Nanny Cay Round Tortola Race on Saturday, January 18.

This the 2019 edition, postponed from November. Sam Talbot and Spike took the racing class honours and David Lake's Wicked Winch winning the cruising class. Line Honours went to Mark Sanders and his Corsair 31, Island Hops, who crossed the finish line in 3 hours 23 minutes and 38 seconds.

The two Cruising class boats, Wicked Winch and Sequitur, were first away. Unfortunately for Sequitur, they blew out their jib en route to pass Scrub Island and were forced to retire. Wicked Winch went on to finish with an elapsed time of 5 hours, 41 minutes and 45 seconds and take first in class.

The Racing Class were next up with four boats in contention. The J111 Spike, skippered by Sam Talbot narrowly missed out on line honours, coming in just over four minutes behind Island Hops.

Next home was Henry Leonnig's Melges 24, Firewater, but they had not done enough to take the class win from Spike. Miles Sutherland-Pilch on Odyssey was third with Becky Paull and Jacques Roux's new Jeanneau Aira coming in fourth.

The Multihull class was the final start with six Corsair trimarans making quite a sight for the spectators at Nanny Cay.

Mark Sanders' Island Hops, the largest of the fleet was first home and then had to wait and see if his rivals were fast enough to beat him. Next came last year's winner Lucky 7 skippered by Eddie Brockbank 12 minutes later followed in rapid succession by Chris Haycraft's Ting a Ling and Barney Crook on Airgasm.

On corrected time, the order was reversed for these three to give Airgasm first in class and first overall, Ting a Ling second and Lucky 7 third.

Island Hops was therefore pushed back to fourth with Ted Reshetiloff skippering Whoop Whoop in fifth and Maytrix, returning to the race course for the first time since last year's Spring Regatta finishing sixth.

With a fresh north-easterly breeze the rain held off to give the competitors fantastic conditions. It was not to be a record breaking year however, with all boats electing to take the shorter route to cut inside the islands of Great Camano, Scrub and Guana meaning they were ineligible for the Nanny Cay Challenge and the Round Tortola Record.
