(PLTM) - Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Deputy Governor and former Director of the Department of Disaster Management, Sharleen Dabreo-Lettsome is urging the BVI public to remain vigilant for the remainder of the hurricane season as she stated that the next storm that passes might be more intense than Dorian.

In early September, Dorian approached the BVI as a tropical storm and then morphed into a hurricane. Besides flooding, the hurricane did not affect the Territory, but it later rained damage and destruction on the Bahamas.

At the Rotary hosted telethon on Tuesday, the recently appointed Permanent Secretary noted that she will still be involved with the DDM and warned that now is not a time for complacency in relation to hurricane preparations.

According to Dabreo, systems are already forming that can spell trouble. She said that she was informed by forecasters that the system that just came off the coast of Africa should be watched.

“There is already convection forming; you see the thunderstorms. It is very important that we remain vigilant, that we keep our eyes on the Atlantic that we remain prepared,” the Permanent Secretary noted.

On the Government’s end, it was mentioned that preparations for the next storm have commenced. According to Dabreo, a meeting was already held to plan.

“We had a meeting this morning (September 10) that was called by His Excellency the Governor and the Hon. Premier to look at the lessons that we learnt from the passing of hurricane Dorian and also to look at where we are with our preparedness efforts,” the Permanent Secretary disclosed.

As she warned that worse storms might be coming, Dabreo noted, “Dorian was an intense storm, so if they’re going to continue on the track, the next one is going to be way worse. We pray that it does not impact on the BVI, but we are appealing to every member of the community.”

“The systems are going to become more frequent coming across Africa. We have to watch them closely. They have done some very strange things. As a human being, as someone who questions life, we're not sure why these storms are behaving the way they are. Is it climate change, is it something else; Armageddon, apocalyptic event; they’re calling it all sorts of things,” the Permanent Secretary added.
