(PLTM) - After waiting and enduring the inconvenience of having to travel to Road Town for banking services, the residents of Virgin Gorda were informed that the Banco Popular branch that is expected to commence services on the island will be ready by October.

Both Premier and Minister for Finance, Hon. Andrew Fahie and Deputy Premier and Ninth District Representative, Hon. Vincent Wheatley announced that they have received promising news that Banco Popular will soon commence providing services in the coming weeks.

During the recent September 2 sitting of the House of Assembly, Hon. Wheatley announced that the October opening of Banco Popular on Virgin Gorda is on track.

Hon. Wheatley said, “I am so happy to see that banking will soon be returning to Virgin Gorda. The keys were handed over from the last bank, I think it was either Friday or Saturday (August 30 or 31). It would be handed over to the new bank hopefully this new week.”

In stating that the opening of the bank would be a welcomed relief, Hon. Wheatley said, “I look forward to a new announcement coming up in a few days time, or weeks' time, but banking should return to Virgin Gorda in October.”

On August 31, Premier Fahie mentioned that the building where the bank is expected to be housed was now available for Banco Popular to commence preparation. In a social media post, Hon. Fahie said, “Every delay is not a denial by God. Today we were officially informed by the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour Holding Limited officials that their building, which is supposed to house Banco Popular in Virgin Gorda, is now finally available.”

“This is good news! People of Virgin Gorda get ready because your Government promised the operation of a physical bank in V.G. once again. Now this will be a reality by October 2019. This news made my day as this will be a relief for the businesses, the people of Virgin Gorda and the Territory. The long-fought battle to have this completed is almost over. Praise be to God,” the Premier added.
