(PLTM) - Students attending the H Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) from September would be able to save hundreds of dollars in textbook costs as the college plans to roll out an eLearning initiative.

This announcement was made recently by President Judith Vanterpool, who dubbed it a digital revolution that will ensure that HLSCC is on par with other colleges worldwide, when it comes to technology.

She said, “This shift in how we deliver our content means we can reduce textbook costs by almost $500 per student,” Vanterpool declared at the 26th HLSCC graduation ceremony last week.

As part of that process, instructors at the college are being taught how to incorporate this into their teaching and to generally prepare to facilitate the change coming in the next semester.

“We are equipping our teachers with the latest learning technologies, changing the ways students will interact with learning material. We are starting a digital revolution,” she added.

The HLSCC President noted also that the computer labs at the college are currently being rebuilt and will be equipped with Microsoft Office 365, which will enable students to be on par with world colleges.

If we say we are starting a digital revolution, then we must have our computer lab in place. Therefore, our computer labs are being rebuilt, and with Microsoft Office 365, we can reach the world,” she added.

In recent years, the soaring cost of college textbooks added a new and significant financial burden to the rising cost of tuition for students across many colleges worldwide.

It is not unusual for a student to face huge expenses in textbook costs per semester. In the face of this reality, many students simply forgo textbook purchases and opt for e-Learning initiatives.

Digital learning platforms such as the one being introduced by HLSCC allows students to arrange their learning materials in a way that makes sense to them.

With their own personal bookshelf comprising e-textbooks, journals and notes, students can access all learning materials across their chosen modules from one place.

They can colour-code their notes to help with visual retention and know that any annotations made will synchronise automatically across all devices.

Many university instructors have also found this type of technology useful.
