(PLTM) - The BVI will soon have a public bus service, and the Festival Grounds will be converted to a public parking with shuttle service to and from Road Town, Minister for Transportation, Works, and Utilities, Hon. Kye Rymer told the House of Assembly last week. The Minister also noted that the grounds will still be used annually for the emancipation festivities.

Hon. Rymer announced that Government is formulating a plan to implement a public bus system. In presenting the plan for the bus service, the Minister told the House, "The public transportation system, more specifically, the community bus system, so Mister Speaker, a reliable and affordable means of transportation can be put in place, using a phased approach firstly for coverage of the whole island of Tortola.”

As a means of pushing forward with the public transportation initiative, the Minister said that tender documents are being prepared for the parking facility, which will involve the conversion of the Festival Grounds.

"Currently, the Ministry is in the process of sending tender documents to start the Mass Parking project, which will be located at the Festival Grounds, which will hold up to 270 vehicles. A shuttle service will be put in place to shuttle residents into town once parked at the Festival Grounds. This space, Mister Speaker, will then become dual purpose for the festival events when that time comes,” he explained.

The Minster also said that once this pilot is successful, the intention is to implement the service on the sister islands.

Hon. Rymer further noted that the the bus service is part of Government’s initiative in addressing the needs of residents of the Virgin Islands.
