(PLTM) - The performances at the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival last night, April 20, can be described as simply electric and kicked off the festival activities with great excitement.

The opening was held just after 9:00 p.m and was followed by an exhilarating performance by the local band Hardcore.

The crowd was sparse at the beginning, but as it got later into the night, hundreds quickly flocked the front of the stage to be thrilled by the singing and dancing sensation Monea, who performed hits like ‘Gypsy’, that got the crowd dancing.

Headliner for the night, Jamaican reggae artiste Dexta Dapps did not disappoint as he delivered an energetic and exhilarating performance that pulled all those who attended the event to the front.

“I feel good,” he told BVI Platinum as he reflected on his over 50 years of participation in the festival, adding, “I usually ride the bike and everything like that…lead the parade.”

He looked back at the changes in festival celebrations over the past 52 years, sharing, “We used to go from a week before Good Friday. We started like a Monday, and we take a break for Good Friday, and then open again the Saturday night and then go down to Easter Monday.”

In a speech read by his niece, Ms. Ann Leonard, the honouree also said, “It brings money to the island and people in the community together. We need that right now, the togetherness.”

Chairman of the Virgin Islands Festivals and Fairs Committee, Mr. Carnel Clyne said he was pleased with the work done by the Virgin Gorda Sub-Committee, which was led by Ms. Lyra George.

In the past, Virgin Gorda Festival especially, has been challenged with receiving monies at the last minute, he stated.

He later announced, “I was just at Standing Finance two days ago and I’m happy to mention that every year going forward, with this new administration, the budget will be passed in December.”

As such, he said funding will be made early so that the planning stage can be off to an early start every year.

“Our aim is to improve all the festivals throughout the BVI and improve the culture of these events,” he stated, vowing to have a gospel show next year.

Ninth District Representative, Hon. Vincent Wheatley and At-Large Representative, Hon. Shereen Flax-Charles—who both hail from Virgin Gorda—both spoke with pride as they underscored the importance of the festival activities.

“Festival is very important and throughout the BVI, persons gravitate to Virgin Gorda during Easter. This is what we as BVIslanders know. It is a blending together of persons from all over the Caribbean and all over the world that come to our country to celebrate with us,” Flax-Charles told the gathering.

“It’s about family…all of us here today, regardless of where we’re from, we are one family,” she added.
