(PLTM) - While promising to take care of the economy, the National Democratic Party (NDP) said that it will also be paying attention to the general and social needs of the people through several initiatives.

"Developing an unemployment benefits package to support our people during difficult times," Hon. Myron Walwyn, Chairman of the NDP said during a rally in Road Town last evening, February 16.

He said that they also plan on improving access to appropriate health services, transport and safe and suitable housing for the elderly population.

If elected for a third term, he said an NDP government will develop innovative means of addressing the need for housing and access to land for young people and young families.

Hon. Walwyn said that they will also be restoring community centers and transforming some into resource centers to be a space that the community can come together, learn and develop meaningful relationships, from young to old.

"We should be reminded that it has always been under the NDP’s leadership that our economy has thrived and that investors, local and foreign, have showed confidence in investing in the Virgin Islands."

"So imagine how we will not just survive, but thrive with an NDP government in office for a third term. Some people forget, but let me help them remember how well the economy always does, only under an NDP administration," he said.

Speaking directly to their recently launched manifesto, Hon. Walwyn spoke to ways they intend to grow the economy, which include investing in new economic sectors, including fishing and agriculture; and supporting new emerging ones, such as construction and renewable energy, that will contribute to growth and employment.

"Facilitating entrepreneurship and innovation, working with the National Business Bureau we will inject $10M to support promising businesses to help them develop; developing the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport for better air access through a public/private partnership; developing an internet highway in conjunction with the current internet providers to support affordable and reliable high speed access," he said.

The NDP leader promised that they will ensure that the BVI remains competitive in the financial services sector by continuing to secure the integrity and credibility of BVI within all relevant international institutions and commercial organizations, whilst at the same time reinvigorating the territory's reputation as a well-regulated finance and business centre of substance.
