(PLTM) - Hon. Myron Walwyn, in a fresh challenge, has asked all the Premier hopefuls to take part in a debate ahead of the general election. He also specifically challenged Hon. Andrew Fahie, Virgin Islands Party (VIP) leader and First District Representative, to run At-Large.

“This election in my opinion will be about leadership, which person is best positioned with their party to take this country forward…I have issued a challenged to anybody who wants to be Premier to debate me,” he said last evening during the National Democratic Party’s (NDP) pep rally on Virgin Gorda (VG).

“Now a debate is not the be it all, end all in terms of the quality of a candidate, because it got some people who can talk a leg off a donkey, but cannot do a thing...But it gives you a good indication as to the knowledge that the person might have and it gives you a window into their heart,” he said.

To drive home his point, the At-Large Representative took residents down memory lane to compare the accomplishments of the VIP and NDP for 12 years respectively.

“…So we are comparing apples with apples.”

He also reiterated his point that both him and Hon. Fahie served as Education Minister for eight years, but more was accomplished under his watch.

“We both served two terms as Education Minister. Now, I say this to you, when people are looking promotion you have to look to see how they handled the responsibilities they had before. And I could tell his record is dismal compared to the work that I got my staff to do in the Ministry of Education,” Hon. Walwyn said.

Speaking to his position that the next Premier should be a Territorial Representative, Hon. Walwyn said that this is the only way the people throughout the Territory will receive good representation.

“Why should you be elected by 400 (persons) and want to call the shots for 15,000. So, if you want accountability, good governance in your Premier, the Premier must be accountable to every single voter in the country. So, I issue a challenge to my opponent (Hon. Fahie) tonight, put somebody to run in the First [District] and meet me at the At-Large…”

He also mentioned that VG has seen several improvements prior to the hurricanes, under under the NDP, with the push from District Nine Representative, Hon. Dr. Hubert O’Neal.

“When you look at the performance on Virgin Gorda, think about how many times you saw him (Fahie) up here.”

Hon. Walwyn said that he visits that island every other Tuesday.

“…Making myself accessible to the people of Virgin Gorda. I never left the people of Virgin Gorda out of anything, and they knew my number and they know I would call them back. And if I cannot help them, it means I cannot get no help.”

“If he (Hon. Fahie) becomes Premier and he down West End, you think he going to study you. You need to have a leader who is accessible to you,” Hon. Walwyn said.
