(PLTM) - A Tortola man is facing court action in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) for smuggling Haitians into the USVI.

Based on reports coming out of the USVI, 25-year-old Ernest Williams was arrested earlier this week for smuggling the illegal immigrants into the US Territory.

Reports indicate U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Air and Marine Operations (AMO) stopped a boat that originated from the BVI that was being operated by the 25-year-old after noticing there were no lights on.

Checks to the boat revealed six other persons onboard the vessel.

Further checks revealed that the other persons were undocumented Haitians—four adults and two minors.

The four Haitians—Daline Ambroise, 23, Presuma Venette, 19, Paul Jn Augustine, 36, and Jordan Ambroise, 36, were also taken into custody and slapped with charges of illegal entry.

An investigation into the matter has been launched.

If found guilty by the court, Williams can be a sentenced up to ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine, while the illegal immigrants can face a maximum sentence of six months and a $5,000 fine.
