(PLTM) - A man who broke into his neighbour’s villa and stole 13 bottles of champagne told police officers that he finished all of the champagne himself.

Akil Anthony of Long Bay appeared before Magistrate Shawn Innocent and pleaded guilty to theft, today, November 12.

Between January 30 and February 10, he broke into his neighbour’s villa and stole the beverage valued at $1920.

The court heard that on February 10, Anthony’s neighbour returned to his villa to inspect works that were being carried out on his property. Upon making checks to his property, he noticed four boxes of his champagne were opened. One box was empty, while several others revealed missing bottles.

The man proceeded to investigate and discovered one of his windows disturbed, as well as a track from his house to Anthony’s back porch. There, he saw a muddy pair of slippers and muddy prints.

He took photos of the scene and called the police.

Later, armed with a search warrant, police officers made checks to Anthony’s house. They discovered seven empty champagne bottles in his trash can. Asked about the bottles, he said,” I forgot that I had more of these bottles,” and later confessed, “I went into the neighbour’s house and took them.”

He said he drank all of the champagne.

The man has committed to compensating his neighbour for the losses before his November 21 sentencing.
