(PLTM) - It is possible that in the future, Caribbean nationals currently requiring visas to enter the BVI may be able to visit the Territory through a new visa-free initiative. However, Premier and Minister for Finance, Dr. the Hon. D. Orlando Smith has refrained from providing firm assurance that government is planning to implement such an arrangement.

The subject of visa-free entry for nationals from Caribbean countries currently requiring a visa was posed to the Premier by Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Andrew Fahie, during the July 19 sitting of the House of Assembly.

During the questions and answers segment, the Opposition Leader queried whether government is going to institute visa-free travel for these nationals in the same manner it did for the nationals of the People’s Republic of China.

The Premier in turn disclosed that government has had discussions on the matter. He told the House, “The visa requirement for Caribbean countries will be reviewed. I cannot at the moment say when this will happen…but it will be reviewed.”

Hon. Fahie followed up by asking the Premier what was reviewed by government in order to implement the new visa free policy for nationals of the People’s Republic of China. He also asked what is being reviewed now in consideration of a visa-free policy for Caribbean nationals.

In response, Hon. Smith announced that government is looking over the reasons why visas were required in the first place.

“We are reviewing the reasons why it was put in place in the first place by several governments, and then decide what will be done,” Hon. Smith said.

Nationals from countries in the region such as the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, and Suriname currently require a visa to enter the Territory.
