(PLTM) - Approaching one year since hurricane Irma ripped through the BVI, and all of the government facilities in the First District are still not working. This is according to Hon. Andrew Fahie, Opposition Leader and First District Representative, who said that government is playing the people of that district for a joke, as his months of begging for repairs have fallen on deaf ears.

“When you analyze the First District and you look at all the government facilities and buildings, none, I said none, nothing working. And it isn’t for the want of me as the representative asking, pleading, coming to the House (of Assembly) asking,” he lamented publicly last week.

He said that it is also unfortunate that the Ministers are not comfortable answering questions pertaining to the issues.

“But if you don’t answer in here (House of Assembly), you have to answer out there. So, it’s might as well you fix it because not fixing, then making me as a representative look bad, that doesn’t do anything. There are people suffering because of this and they are coming to me all the time, and I am concerned.”

“I am asking that some work be done on government buildings and facilities in the First District because none of them have been repaired,” he said.

Some of the issues mentioned were water shortage, the police station, fire station and dilapidated roads.

“…Down Frenchman’s Cay the road eating out; it’s almost a one-way. I have made representation to have that road fixed. I have done it over and over to the point where residents think that you are not looking after this issue. I don’t know what else to do,” he said.

Hon. Fahie continued, “You have to choose which pothole to drop your car in because you cannot miss all, and they are not small potholes…The police station in West End turn off with a lot of speed, the roof is on but since then nothing. Then we have no school down there; not fixed…The children have to suffer a little longer under those tents down there.”

The First District Representative also complained that there are no hurricane shelters.

“Find out when the community centers are going to be fixed because the only place we have to go if a hurricane comes now is to go with the hurricane. We don’t have any shelters down there.”

He pleaded with the Premier to assist.

“I am asking in this nice manner for this last time. Premier I am coming to you as the leader of the government to ask them to get these matters dealt with and they have been reported…So, somebody is playing the people in that area for joke” he stated.

The Opposition Leader said that he is making efforts to secure donations to fix the recreational facilities.
